Buzz Eatz – A Christmas Feast of Cultures

December 2009
Christmas in the United States is a multi-cultural affair. Here, traditional English ham with Polish sausages.

In my house, you could smell Christmas coming out of the kitchen. A rich, golden scent would drift from my mother’s kitchen, stirring her five children awake. We would rub the sleep from our eyes, feeling giddy from the yeasty smell of puff pastry. It signalled the start of things to come that day – ham and eggrolls, among them …

Buzz Eatz – Let’s Talk Turkey

November 2009
Perfectly bronzed Thanksgiving turkey, glistening with juices, requires some prepping. Take the time and brine.

Thanksgiving is always a crapshoot. From the moment the turkey goes into the oven, my family keeps its fingers crossed.

My brothers and sisters have explored and experimented with dozens of ways to cook turkey. After more than 40 birds, testing temperatures and times, turning, basting, smoking and deep-frying, we all agree our favorite is brining and old-fashioned oven roasting.…

Buzz Eatz – Grocery Wars

October 2009

I had brought along a Villa Antinori Toscana ’06, which …

Buzz Eatz – Take-five Dinner Solutions

August 2009
A quick and easy five-ingredient caprese salad of sliced tomato, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, olive oil and sea salt.

Between work and carting the kids around, no wonder many parents succumb to the temptation of takeout food. I know I have, many times. But then I started doing the math.

The next time, I took five, as in five ingredients to make a one-dish meal.

When you count the minutes, you’ll realize that it takes just as much time …

Buzz Eatz – Simple pleasures: Paris in a basket

July 2009
(Reprinted from Monet by Yvon Taillandier, Crown Art Library)

Shaded by sun-dappled trees, the women in the painting enjoy a picnic flanked by elegant suitors. Like swans, their white gowns form a circle of ruffled lace on the ground. Nearby are mounds of fresh fruits, baguettes, thick wedges of salt-cured ham, a chocolate cake and bottles of red wine. “The Picnic Lunch” memorializes Claude Monet’s sentimental, idyllic view of …
