January 2012

It started in a wine cave. Over a year ago, David Denenburg and Frani Broussard went to Napa Valley. During a private tour of the Rubicon Estate Winery, David proposed to Frani, as they made a great “pairing.” They married at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica in Beaumont, where Frani’s parents were married. The party, held in a tent on the church grounds, had a photo booth, a late-night crepe cart and a Michael Jackson impersonator (a surprise from Frani to David). A vintage white Rolls Royce, sporting oggi sposi (“just married” in Italian) on the license plate whisked the couple away for their honeymoon in Castiglion del Bosco and Venice. The parents of the couple are Marian and Patrick Broussard and Sandi and Victor Denenburg.

Eureka! It’s Thanksgiving. After traveling to Eureka Springs, Ark., for business trips twice a year, Linda Suib decided it would be fun to visit strictly for fun during Thanksgiving. Part of her relaxation included a spa day at the Crescent Hotel. She stayed at the Red Bud Manor, a historical home turned into a bed and breakfast, where she devoured their five-course breakfast to jump start her day. She and a friend went to nearby Holiday Island for TG dinner at a friend’s home. Fortunately there was a new club in town, Vous Le Vous, with a live band to dance off the calories.

Butterflies float over the crib. Jeremy and Julie Atlas Taylor became parents of 9-pound Anna Dillon Taylor on Nov. 9. Both sets of Anna’s grandparents, Cindy and Brian Atlas and Marilyn and Bob Taylor, were in town to welcome her late arrival. Anna has adjusted to life in her pink room with dogs Aiden and Dakota keeping watch over her.

First baby! Lauren and Darrell Miller’s first child was born 11/1/11. His name is Blake Meyer Miller. Grandparents include Susan and Craig Sellinger, as well as great grandfather Lasker M. Meyer and great grandparents Janice and Louis Caplan.

Briargrove Elementary is taking root. The themed garden at the school is the BG Edible Schoolyard, modeled on a movement initiated by chef Alice Waters of Chez Panisse fame in northern California. Garden leaders Ellecia Knolle and Mariana Cypher want the kids to dig in the dirt to understand the connection between the earth, food and life. Parent volunteers built the 8-inch raised beds, but the children plant and maintain the garden during school hours. The first phase, funded by a $3,000 grant from Aramark, benefits the K-2 classes. The kinder kids (Little Sprouts) and first and second graders planted their beds around Thanksgiving. In the spring you will see an expansion for the 3-5 grades as well as the science lab. Take a peek at the garden’s initial phase on the northeast side of the school visible from San Felipe.

The Black and White Affair at Roak. A chic crowd relished savory bites and signature cocktails as they admired MFAH and MOCAH art exhibits, participated in raffles and selected families to sponsor. Event chairs Myra Johnson, Amy Powell and Ken Krimmel, with the help of Nicki Lowenstein, raised enough to feed hundreds of families from Star of Hope, Salvation Army, victims of the Bastrop fire and more. Some of the caring folks were Alejandra McCutchen, Chris Lyons, Pamela Wright, Sharon Wendell, Jack Opatrany and Peter Remington.

11-11-11. A fall party was held to celebrate friendships at Tracy Erwin’s new high-rise condo. Her friend, Joanne Naponic, held the party for the people who are No. 1 in her life. Tracy moved from Spring Valley in October. Yvonne Cooksey, Phyllis Rauls and Dick Bueltel were there to help break the place in.

Music from DJ Synplicity was blaring. The Sing For Hope after party was themed a Venetian Masquerade. It benefited low-income patients with HIV/AIDS, via Bering Omega Community Services. The young-professionals board, host committee and chairs Liz Gorman, Nick Espinosa and Jerry Guerrero all honored Brian O’Leary at this new event. Masked partiers Fernando Aramburo, Sarah Walters, Paul Pettie, Sara Brown, Vicki Ellis, Josephine and Albert Tervalon, Julie Soefer, Kendra Thiessen, Eliza Wright and Stephenie Schillaci enjoyed cocktails and late-night snacks to help raise more than $8,400 at The Houston Club.
