On an IT roll

Edward Morris, a junior, is an IT expert at Lamar High School.

When I came to Lamar High School as a freshman in 2009 I could never have imagined that I would one day work as an employee of the school district. I had always had an interest in computers and the way things worked, and I had spent much of my time at St. John’s middle school working in the theater on sound and lighting and taking photographs for the school’s paper. At Lamar I’ve worked as a photographer and now an editor of the school yearbook. I am also the station manager for the school’s TV studio and work on producing our daily news show. I record the anchors reading the day’s news, and then cut in video segments produced by other students to create the show, which airs every day in the school at 11:30 a.m. This past summer I worked in Lamar’s IT (information technology) department supporting the school’s televisions, phones and computers. I still work after school with the IT department, and in the school performance hall, directing the video system and lighting for dance shows, concerts and other productions.

I work outside of school as a photographer, videographer and producer of private events through Roll Twenty Four Productions, a business I started my sophomore year as part of my IB (International Baccalaureate) personal project. This has led me to jobs such as covering the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons conference in downtown Houston, several weddings and a crazy Halloween murder-mystery dinner. I am now hoping to develop Roll Twenty Four into a business targeted at live streaming and web production. Once I became known around campus for my technical skills, I was offered a summer job as a Lamar teacher’s assistant, and eventually HISD added me to its support staff. When I’m not tinkering with electronics, I play with my black Lab, Scout, or I drive to College Station to visit my friend Emily. I’m planning to apply to several colleges in New York City.
