Nobody wants to be “that guy”. You know, the one who friends every single kid in the “Freshman 2014 University” Facebook group. Or the guy who knocks on your door and tries to get you to attend the “mandatory” hall meetings in your dorm. Yeah, they’re the college horror stories you hear about with the college freshman curled up in a ball crying his eyes out every night alone. What these poor misguided souls don’t understand about the art of making friends is that college is not about being overtly and cheaply outgoing. The glaring flaw in their scheme to develop a dynamic friend group lies inherently in the simple fact that most human beings can simply and instinctively detect falsity or deception. Call is spidey sense, or a sixth sense, or whatever you want to call it but everyone knows the feeling when they just sense someone is lying. The multiple thank you’s and forced jokes will only serve to alienate you from the college crowd you will find yourself around. How do you avoid this? BE REAL. Don’t come into college looking to fulfill a stereotypical role or persona. Your peers WILL notice and you WILL be sleeping alone for your next four years. But seriously, be yourself, it’ll save you a lot of hassle in the future.
