It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Sidney Smith McClendon III, who died from a tragic accident on June 12, 2010 in Houston. Sid devoted most of his life helping others through his career as a lawyer. After retiring, he assisted civic organizations to restore Galveston after Hurricane Ike. Sid loved the water and was passionate about beach preservation. Sid was instrumental in assisting with the development of our April 2009 feature story, Back to Galveston. He charmed our staff during our photo shoot in Galveston and we loved having him on the magazine’s cover. Sid will be greatly missed by many in our community. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, Houston, Texas, 77056; St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, the Sidney McClendon Fund, c/o Philanthropy Office (MC3-206), 3100 Main Street, Suite 865, Houston, Texas, 77002; The Bonner Whitaker McClendon House, P. O. Box 10036, Tyler, Texas, 75711; or to the charity of your choice.

I had the pleasure to meet Sid in 2009 and he was extremely gracious and interesting. So sad to hear about his passing.
