As the school year was winding down, many of the area’s top high school athletes were gearing up to compete at the collegiate level, including a standout group of players from Memorial High School.
The 15 athletes, who’ll be attending major universities across the nation, were honored during a special reception at Memorial. “It’s really exciting, just because we’ve …

Charming, secluded and tight knit – that’s how a lot of residents describe the Memorial neighborhood of Riverbend. Nestled into a corner of Hunters Creek Village, cradling a bend in Buffalo Bayou, sits what you might call an upscale version of Mayberry. Prime property here is so coveted that houses sell before sale signs hit the dirt.
There’s something else about the 69 oversized lots lined with spacious ranch-style homes and dotted with tall trees – the neighborhood is crawling with kids. Some of them liken their childhood in Riverbend to a magical place where lifelong friendships are forged, forever cemented with longevity and loyalty. Among them are nine high school seniors who graduated last month.
Miles Abell (Episcopal High School), Thomas Burke (Episcopal), Reese Henningsen (Episcopal), Alec Horner (Strake Jesuit College Preparatory), Ford Jones (The Kinkaid School), Harrison Kane (Episcopal), Scott Lange…

Our former lawn boys, babysitters and grocery sackers are all grown up. Take a walk down memory lane as we spotlight some of our neighborhood high school grads, looking back at their early interests that, for some, may become their lifelong passions.
1. Alexandra Watt – The Kinkaid School
As an animal lover, Alexandra Watt was sure she would grow up to be a veterinarian, but that was only until she discovered her talent for writing. Now she is off to the University of Georgia, where she will be an English major. She hopes to be an author or journalist someday.
2. Carter Holmes – Briargrove Elementary, St. Francis Episcopal and Episcopal High School
From that first Astros game and lots of games of catch with his dad, Carter Holmes was determined to…

When his wife totaled his car, Dr. Charles Koller took it as a sign. He bought a bike and rode to work the next day.
That was 21 years ago. He still rides 3.2 miles from West University to the Medical Center and back nearly every day, rain – thanks to rain boots and a slicker – or shine. He doesn’t own a vehicle of his own.
“The only exercise I get is riding my bike to work and back. And it’s great exercise,” said Koller, 60, a leukemia specialist at M.D. Anderson. “I like to see the seasons change. I like to see what people have growing in their yard. I like to see the houses being built.”
Nearly 4,000 working Houstonians, or just .04 percent, ride their bicycles to work, according to a 2008 U.S. Census survey. Pedaling might take a little longer than driving, but the commute is more pleasurable, say cyclists. And when traffic…

Educating others about Tourrette’s
I was born with Tourette Syndrome (TS), a genetic neurological disorder characterized by involuntary motor and vocal tics. It is sometimes associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and/or obsessive compulsive disorder. Sometimes tics can be misdiagnosed as “nervous habits” or being too hyperactive. I showed symptoms of TS when I was 2 years old. I had excessive blinking and …

The crawdad season may have gotten off to a slow start this year, but the mudbugs are in full swing now, and that means plenty of backyard boils are going on.
Louisiana Foods imports 10,000 to 50,000 pounds of Cajun bugs a week this time of year. Co-owner Jim Gossen says the lingering cold made the May-to-early-July season start a …

Jori, age unknown
Poodle-Bichon (Poochon)
Bayou Glen
My name is Jori, and I’m not exactly certain how old (or young) I am. I’m a Poochon, a combination Poodle-Bichon. I was rescued from the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Control, where I had been sent to “doggy death row” because I developed heartworms. Listen up, people: There’s a cure for that …

Houstonians mark a rite of passage in the Galapagos
Few places on Earth awe the spirit like the Galapagos Islands. Here is a place where smoldering volcanoes pulse with red-hot rivers of molten stone; where penguins from the frigid south cohabit with sea lions from the balmy north; where cartoonish creatures, from the bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs to the …

Life was all planned out. Early retirement, then leisurely pursuits. But the plans of several local men of a certain mature age underwent a few modifications – thanks to the pitter patter of tiny feet.
“Yes, if things had worked out differently, I would have liked to have children earlier, but I am so glad I finally got started,” says …

They have high-up friends… Nick and Francis Carter Stephens returned from a 10-day vacation of Vatican proportions in Rome. They celebrated Nick’s birthday on March 17 by attending the St. Patrick’s Day reception as guests of the Irish ambassador to the Vatican, Noel Fahey, and his wife, Christine, at Villa Spada, the Irish embassy there. There was beautiful art and …
